The Scouts Network Programme of The Wildlife Foundation employs local Maasai youth to monitor wildlife movement, variability, and density within the project area. The scouts also monitor compliance to the Lease Program. All scouts are hired from within the local Maasai community, providing increased household income and improved livelihoods. Participants also receive basic training in important professional skills, improving their employment opportunities in the future.
The duties and responsibilities of the Field Scouts include monitoring wildlife movement and habits in the area, observing existing poaching, witnessing and reporting human-wildlife conflict, preventing lethal action (killing) of wildlife in the area, monitoring lease holders compliance to lease agreement, reporting illegal/criminal action against wildlife, providing regular reporting to the relevant authorities, and attending wildlife related meetings/functions in the area of jurisdiction.
